The Deterioration Of The Aristotelian Worldview - 1069 Words

The deterioration of the Aristotelian worldview began around the time of the Reformation of the Catholic Church. The reformation of the Catholic Church up until this time had been in control of the teachings and discoveries at that time until Martin Luther questioned the Church and its teachings. Luther had brought to people’s attention how controlling the Church was over what was being taught and the people began to realize that there could be more out in the world to discover. People began to become curious and wanted to read the Bible and think for themselves. Along with the Reformation, the pushing of the Muslims from the East created an opportunity of scientific discoveries to occur. The Muslims had caused the people to move and take ancient books with them that contained different philosophical discoveries from scientist such as Hippocrates, Galen, Euclid, etc. Scientist were amazed at the discoveries and beliefs that were founded and could not believe that they had not known about them. Reading about their discoveries and beliefs caused scientist to build off of what the early philosophers had founded. Scientists that played important roles in the deterioration of the Aristotelian worldview was Nicolas Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, and Galileo. These men put forth information that early men of astronomy and philosophy could not imagine and the advancement in technology was to thank for that. Nicolas Copernicus realized that the Ptolemaic system did an awful job of

White Collar Crime The Effects and Punishments - 5087 Words

White Collar crime has been a hot topic since the 20th century. Edwin Sutherland introduced the term at the fourth annual meeting of the Sociological Association. At this meeting he explained who this type of criminal is and what the criminal does for a living. Sutherland developed a theory to try and fit this type of criminal. The theory is differential association. There are four different pieces of evidence to understand the theory. White collar crime ranges from Embezzlement to Mortgage Fraud. This paper will explain several incidents which are involved with white collar crime and how it hurts many individuals from families to businesses. The sentencing guidelines help convict criminals. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act helped add on top of the†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ The New York Times in 1931 reported four cases of embezzlement in the United States with a loss of more than $1 million each and a combined loss of $9 million. This financial loss from white collar crime, great as it is, is less important than the damage to social relations. White collar crimes violate trust and therefore create distrust, and this lowers social morale and produces social disorganization on a large scale. * White Collar Crime: The Uncut Version, 1983 One can conclude that Sutherland says white collar crime is the most dangerous type of crime because it financially hurts a society. The statistics provided by Sutherland was of embezzlers, white collar crime creates morale conflicts within a society and social disorganization; it is also unethical in day to day business practices. Due to the threats that white collar crime creates in a society, Sutherland was able to reject previous criminology theories of psychopathological or economic factors (i.e., being from lower class and poverty, broken home) that explain/justify criminal behavior. Sutherland created the differential association theory, which was to include all crimes from all classes, lower class and upper class society.Show MoreRelatedStreet Crime And White Collar Crimes766 Words   |  4 Pageseconomic crimes goes up as well. Disordering Fantasies of Coal and Technology †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Disordering Fantasies of Coal and Technology. Answer: Introduction In Australia, energy policy is subject to the policy goal of three layer of government. In case of primary industries like coal and other minerals, policies are undertaken through active intervention of state and federal government. In view of interrupted supply of energy, Energy White Paper, a government of science, innovation and industry, designs Energy policy framework. In recent days, energy supply in Australia is highly disrupted. Therefore, a steady long term policy framework is needed to handle the situation. In a recently published article in The Australian, President Malcom Turnbull has announced future energy policy of the state. Present paper makes an economic analysis of the published article. The government has set a high bar on the national energy policy. The target is to provide a uninterrupted power supply at an affordable price. At the same time the target of reduced energy emission will also be kept in mind. The prime minister has given assurance to energy chiefs that the government is designing long-term policies to provide certainty to too the investors investing in new stations (theaustralian.com.au 2017). The federal government has adapted the recommendation of reviewing electricity market and taken a clean energy target mission. The federal officials are arranging meetings with retail electricity suppliers. Detail discussions has made with them to know the accrual picture of the energy market. Before taking any long-term policy, focus has been given on short run policy measures. This information is important to take decision on long term policy (theconversation.com 2017). Another long run policy target in energy sector includes attempts to fill the gaps of base load power. However, government also recognizes the importance to maintain an investment friendly environment to fulfill the long run policy targets. Economic theories and concept Supply of a good or services present producer ability of supply the good or service at different prices. In free market equilibrium supply matches with the demand and hence efficient price prevail in the market. Any change in demand supply condition leads to abnormally high or low price in the market. If there are any shortage in the supply then supply curve shifts to the left. In this time, demand exceeds available supply, pushing the prices up (Cheung and Davies 2017). The situation of supply shortage is explained in the following diagram In Australia, consumers are suffering from power shortage and this pushes the price up. A significant portion of Australias overall power supply comes from South Australia. The subsidized wind power plants in these regions enjoy considerable cost benefits (Gillingham et al. 2013). Closing down of the existing plants in other parts of Australia has created problem in supply front. The situation further aggravates with the decision of some gas plant to hold production capacity. All these created trouble to consumers who are left with paying high price and even suffering from a power shortage (Hughes and Urpelainen 2015). The situation thus indicates the inefficiency of government interventionist policies. The subsidies given to energy plants in South Australia lead to concentration of market power in the hands of energy suppliers there (Marshall 2016). Energy plants in Victoria and few powerful gas generators enjoy considerable market power. The decision to provide subsidy to plants was taken under the scheme of Renewable Energy Target. However, the recent problem of power shortage and high price questions the subsidy decision of labor government (Lenzen et al. 2016). Prime Minister Turnbull thus gives stress on an efficient energy management policy. Flawless supply of energy requires storage of energy. It is needed to store the energy in appropriate form such that it can be made available whenever needed to match electricity supply and demand. Storing energies in the form of electricity in batteries, heat or as pumped water is usually subject to high cost (Chen and Yin 2017). Recommendation Energy is used in every sphere of economic activity. Industrial progress largely depends on the flawless supply of energy. Therefore, federal government should give attention in designing efficient energy policy. This requires detailed investigation on the existing inefficiencies of the management. The management should focus on securing long-term interest of the consumers. The unutilized energy resources should be reviewed and make an afford to utilized these resources. An advisory board should be formed for efficient designing of energy policy. More use of renewable energy should be given focus to secure an uninterrupted power supply both for domestic and industrial purpose. Conclusion In the assignment, analysis has been done on energy policy of Australia. In connection to disturbance recorded in the power supply in the previous year appropriate energy policy is utmost need of Australia. In this regard, Prime minister has declared long-term policy goal of the nation. Special attention has given on the issue of supply shortage and proper storage of energy so that it can be made available at times of crisis. In the end, some recommendations have been made for betterment of energy policy in Australia. References Chen, W. and Yin, H., 2017. Increase in production cost of spares and equipmentdue to increase in labour cost, raw material cost, equipment cost etc. Cash flow problem when cash proves inadequate to meet the financial obligation of the company. Decline in product demand of MSL due uncertain event in the market. Litigation and claims face by MSL due to employeesmisbehavior in different countries remote areas. An auditor with Crampton and Hasaad has found various audit risk while auditing the financial statement of MSL (ACCA, ANSWERING AUDIT RISK QUESTIONS, 2015). Audit risk There is a great probability that the auditor associated with the business enterprise might lack in the decision making and states an inappropriate opinion towards the enterprise financial statements. Auditor will access inherent risk, control risk and accordingly find the level of audit risk materiality enables the auditor to apply procedure which can support his opinion that is higher the materiality level, higher will be materiality level, higher the need of audit evidence and lower will be the audit risk thus there is inverse relationship between audit materiality and audit risk. Also, there exists inverse relationship among risk of material misstatement and detection risk as higher the level of risk of misstatement lower will be the detection risk and vice versa. When there is lack of internal control environment in the current business establishment it will give rise to the associated inherent risk. When auditor is required to enhance its judgment skills to give an appropriate decision there can be a instance that auditor might misses out to ascertain material facts, this will give rise to the inherent risk (simplified, 2013). Control risk arises when related internal control in MSL exists but ineffective or in other words, we can say that when absence or failure in the operation of the relevant control of the entity results in amaterial misstatement in the financial statement. Assessment of control risk is higher if financial statement is prepared by individual who dont have necessary technical knowledge of accounting and finance (simplified, 2013). Situation of detection risk arise when in situation there are certain material miss-statements and auditor fails to disclose in its opinion report due to lack of determination and skills in identifying it. The auditor may apply proper policies and procedure to detect a material misstatement in financial statement arising due to omission, fraud, and error. Detection risk can be reduced or controlled by auditor if it increase the number of sample transaction for detailed (simplified, 2013). Bibliography ACCA. The High School Experience free essay sample

It is well known that being a teenager is difficult, and being a teenager in high school is even more challenging. Now combine the difficulties of being a teenager in high school with being overweight and you’ve created for yourself the recipe for disaster. Usually you hear about the bullying that teenagers endure throughout their high school experience, yet those stories and happenings disappear over time. They aren’t really spoken about much after the fact or even brought up. Did you know though that some of the bullying that goes on can lingers inside your soul, memory, and everyday life, haunting you forever? That one memory can spark an array of emotions from the one-day in that one lunchroom on October 12th when you were called FAT in front of those seven people. Normally in movies there’s two people, the person bullying and the person being bullied. The person being bullied usually closes themselves off from the outside world, they want to be left alone and don’t want to interact or become involved with the bully, the reason for this is that they know more pain could be directed their way if they stand up for themselves. We will write a custom essay sample on The High School Experience or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This one bully has the tongue of a serpent. Why would they want to get themselves embarrassed another time? They are quiet and try to ignore the bully, yet the bully somehow always manages to rise above and control their feelings due to the words they use to hurt them. The movie is coming to an end now, miraculously the one who was being bullied has risen above and figured out a way to triumphantly defeat the bully, and all ends well. The bullied has become brave and happy and then the credits roll. Unfortunately real life doesn’t roll that way, its much more severe and damaging. Being overweight brings many things amongst tear and unhappiness. There this â€Å"thin† person dying to be let out and accomplish things a â€Å"thin† person does. Wait though, what is this â€Å"thin† that is spoken about? This â€Å"thin† is the person who can fit into any article of clothing without hassle. One of the difficulties with being overweight is that you do not fit into most of the things you want, you wish to portray this style inside and want to share with the world your artistic point of view through fashion because its a silent statement, nevertheless, that cant even be accomplished because nothing fits you. The frustration is unbearable and honestly unspeakable, this is a scenario where if you haven’t gone through it yourself, you honestly can’t say, â€Å"I know†. Being in large groups is another pressure for the overweight teenage girl, tons of questions ponder through her mind. What is everyone thinking about me? Fat girl or nice girl? Or nice fat girl? Never being calling by your name always referred to as she or her; realistically because no one remembers ugly, only â€Å"hot†. Once in a blue moon though you will be called a name, a name that isn’t yours and a name that isn’t hurtful, its wonderful because for that slight moment you think they actually remembered you, but they have just called you the name of another girl, a girl that is also overweight. Active? You become fatigued at the slightest motions, why even attempt sports if you know it’s an automatic fail. There’s no point. You have tried before but it’s always ended up with the dissatisfaction you bring to yourself because you are naturally not good enough for being active. This bullying that is spoke of will never end. This â€Å"fat† has now become apart of the daily wardrobe you present to others; your shirt, pants, shoes, makeup and fat, it’s just another accessory added on. Don’t like it? That’s unfortunate, welcome to the club. The first time someone says it to you or refers to you as it, this emotion of death passes over you, as if a loved one is lost for forever. I still to this day cant express or even try to explain this feeling, its empty, lonely and scary. You are no longer a regular person you are now a person with a label, a label that has complete control over how you will behave, dress, talk and think. You feel as if you are socially unaccepted. Some would never think that this word could have such an impact on the way a person feels, nonetheless, this one word has the ability to dictate a person as if it can control everything and anything within that person, and you the bully are to blame for that. Did you ever think about the aftermath that occurs when you call someone fat? That someone could feel all these horrible things at once from a three-lettered adjective? The three-lettered adjective you had provided them with? That there entire day could be ruined just from the mere memory of when you had called them fat in that certain lunch room on October 12th 2010, when that same feeling they received that day can pop up at any time and haunt them for hours on end until they feel so disgusted and sick and embarrassed of themselves that all they want to do is be silent and away from the world until they feel human and lifelike again? I can guarantee you had no idea the disgusting impact you had on them. Born this way is the one and only quote that explains myself positively. I am proud to be able to understand and take to heart what this quote means. Lady Gaga has provided me with an outlet, an outlet where I am not alone with these feelings. Supplies this whole other world, this entire new generation and race. A race that bears no prejudice, no judgment and boundless freedom. This world is where her little monsters congregate and share their stories and feelings and help others. We protect one another and encourage life into some, stopping the self-harm that may be inflicted to someone. Born this way provides a safe place for the freaks and underdogs and the bullied. She has inspired me to love myself and to be proud of the person I am today. The people who are less fortunate in the social society; the girls who are considered gross, not pretty and unattractive; the boys who don’t get girls, who arent muscularly, photo shopped and charming. This three-worded phrase was able to turn that three-lettered word for me into nothing, bust dust. I say this to myself everyday, look straight into the mirror and realize I am not perfect, however I was born this way, and Im beautiful to myself. There is guaranteed to be the population that doesn’t see it and I am comfortable with that because I see it and that’s all the matters. I finally fully love and respect myself. I will now and forever stay true to mysef and will never underestimate who I can be as a person or try to hide who I am from the world. Simply because I am who I am, amazing and strong willed, open-minded and concerned, thoughtful and scared, as are many. Mostly however I am a person, a person with the same feelings as you and anyone else who has been hurt has. I no longer have a label; I have erased it from my memory and started fresh. I have risen above my insecurities, embraced them and I am now proud to glorify them for everyone to see. I am stronger emotionally and realize that t hree letter word means as much as dirt in the ground, nothing. The imperfection we all embrace as a society has finally meant something to me and has become perfect, I respect the fact that there will be bullies in my life and everyone else’s. The only thing to do though is never let that one person who is miserable inside for their own reasons drag you down with them. You may listen to what they say and ignore it, or you can listen and respond by shocking them, offering the help they most likely need, love. I was a teenage girl that was overweight and had self esteem issues. I have been bullied and I want to share the depth of what happens after the bully has spoken. How the quote Born this way has impacted me to become a better person from the experience and realize that everyone was born his or her own way, not matter what in the end we are all beautiful and human. I also wanted to share about how the bully is now silenced and whatever might be said from them won’t be heard however, helped.

How to Reveal Invisible Ink Messages

How to Reveal Invisible Ink Messages Most invisible ink messages can be revealed by heating the paper on which they are written. The ink weakens the fibers in the paper so the message discolors (burns) before the rest of the paper. The real secret, aside from the message, is how to reveal it without setting your paper on fire. Tip: Dont use a lighter, match, or open fire to reveal your invisible ink message. You can lay the paper over an incandescent light bulb with fairly good results, but it is hard to tell if your paper is hot enough, so you may not know whether your paper is blank or whether you just cant see the message. There Are Other Methods That Work Better You can iron your paper (dont use steam). This is probably the best method, but you may not have an iron or else have no idea where you put it. A hot iron for your hair also works. Another simple method is to wave the paper over a hot stove. If you have a secret invisible ink message, youll start to see some distortion of the paper as it gets hot. If you continue heating the paper, the message will darken to a gold or brown color. If you use a stove, its still possible to ignite your message, but it is a lot less likely than if you used fire. You Can Use Almost Anything to Write an Invisible Ink Message Try using a broken toothpick as a pen and saliva or lemon juice as ink. You can even use plain water to write the message... the message wont darken, but when you first heat the paper the fibers that were moved when the paper absorbed the water will bulge out a bit. Try it!

Majority Rule and Minority Rights in American Government Essay

Majority Rule and Minority Rights in American Government - Essay Example 3). Indeed, there are several places in the Constitution where suspicion of unchecked majority power is evident - from the Bill of Rights to the structure of the Senate to the Electoral College. To be sure, some historical events that ran relatively concurrent with the birth of the United States, primarily the French Revolution and its associated "Reign of Terror," provided ample illustration of the potential for majority rule to degenerate into mob rule. Majority rule means a system of government in which the will of the majority if given full force and effect within the laws and regulations of the country. It is, essentially, a pure democracy. Minority rights are those liberties and privileges that naturally accrue toward those who do not necessarily agree with the will of the majority. The latter rights have been associated with the concepts of natural law and human rights, whereby those in the minority deserve to be treated with a certain minimum level of dignity and respect simply because they are humans and citizens of the country that acknowledges and respects those natural rights. In his seminal work On Liberty, John Stuart Mill lays his doctrine of the right of individuals to act in any way they choose so long as it does not interfere with the freedom of others. This notion of liberty is essential to minority rights in a democracy. Democracy in the United States In many ways, the United States Constitution does not really set up a majority rule system - that is, it is not a true democracy. A close evaluation of the various branches of government reveals that the only body that is designed to be truly responsive to the will of the majority is the House of Representatives, established under Article 1 of the Constitution. The President is not even directly elected by the people under Article 2 of the Constitution; the Senate's lengthy six year terms arguably insulate its members from the whim of the majority (Article 1); and members of the Supreme Court, where the buck truly stops on how Americans are governed, are appointed for life by this President and Senate that are buffered from the will of the majority (Article 3). Moreover, the Constitution established a federal system in which the states retain substantial sovereignty in nearly all matters of government, greatly limiting the extent to which the central government of the U.S. has the power to impose the will of the national majority. The 10th Amendment states that all powers not specifically enumerated within the Constitution as belonging to the federal government are reserved to the states. Thus, it is necessary that some specific provision of the Constitution grants authority to the federal government in order for it to legally regulate any given area. In that vein, the commerce clause, granting to the federal government the power to regulate interstate commerce, has often been heavily relied upon to justify laws enacted by Congress. This has come to the great chagrin of many strict constructionists, who have protested the Supreme Court's invoking of the commerce clause to uphold the legality of many federal laws that have had a connection t o interstate commerce that is tenuous at best. The effects of these severe
